Relations between Turkey and Togo

Turkey and Togo enjoy peaceful bilateral relations, which have so far rather been conducted through meetings held on the margins of international conferences. However, activities aiming at enhancing bilateral relations have gained momentum over the recent period.

Our Embassy in Accra, which was re-opened as of 1 February 2010, has been accredited to Togo, while Togo’s Embassy in Berlin is accredited to Turkey.

The Togolese citizen Franck Dovi Sessou was appointed as Turkey’s Honorary Consul in Lomé in 2006.

Togo attended the First Turkey-Africa Cooperation Summit held in İstanbul in August 2008 with a delegation led by the then Prime Minister of Togo H.E. Mr. Komlan Mally, who was received by President of the Republic of Turkey H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The trade volume between Turkey and Togo amounted to 37.5 million USD in 2010. The main products that Turkey exports to Togo are cereals, iron and steel, paper, carton and meat; whereas cocoa and vehicles floating on water are the main products Turkey is importing from Togo.

Efforts aiming at establishing the juridical basis for enhancing commercial and economic relations between the two countries are underway.

Five scholarships for undergraduate degrees have been granted by the Government of Turkey to the Government of Togo for the academic year 2011-2012.
